The Nissan Sentra first arrived on U.S. shores in the early 1980’s. At that time, it was one of the most efficient models on the road, centering its marketing on its 43/58 mpg fuel economy. Through the years, fuel economy has remained a strong feature in the Sentra’s long life.
In the beginning, the Sentra was offered as a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, two-door hatchback and four-door wagon with two engines, each delivering less than 90 hp. The next wave of Sentra models then came through, offering more luxury trims like the E, XE, SE and GXE, as well as the first 90 hp engine.
In the early 90’s, Nissan decided to drop the wagon and hatchback models for a Limited Edition trim. At this time, horsepower had begun to increase to 140 ponies. The beginning of the 21st century marked the first real makeover for the Sentra. It became a little larger with sportier features.
Since then, the Sentra has continued to grow in size, as well as power. Many Sentra models throughout the years have been awarded Best Automotive Value titles, safety awards and many other accolades.
